New Brighton SLSC was officially formed on 14 July 1910 as the first surf life saving club in New Zealand. The weekend of 10 March to 13 March 2011 will see the club observe its centenary by hosting the National Surf Life Saving Championships, which will incorporate the NZ Masters Championships. Official events for the weekend will include a conversazione on the Friday, a Banquet Dinner on the Saturday and post-nationals celebration on the Sunday. However, the centenary celebrations are not limited to just the Nationals weekend engagements. The 2010/2011 surf season will begin with a centenary dinner in July 2010 and be followed by a season-long showcase of the New Brighton SLSC, including an All-Stars Southern Surf League competition in January 2010, Fireworks displays off the iconic New Brighton Pier and other events which will celebrate the history and traditions that have been formed by the most senior surf club in New Zealand. All enquiries, other than memorabilia, should be forwarded to Neil Blanchfield at Great Events, either neil@greatevents.co.nz or +64 (3) 377 1700. Any plans to submit memorabilia should be arranged by contacting Dave Taylor. New Brighton’s centenary celebrations are sure to celebrate both the club’s history as well as Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s mantra of being ‘In it for Life’. We look forward to celebrating a century of saving lives, and making New Zealand’s favourite playground safer! |
