SEASON CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SURF LIFESAVING VOLUNTEERS:

The Oldest Surf Life Saving Club
in New Zealand
- Established in 1910 -
The New Brighton Surf
Lifesaving Club is the oldest surf lifesaving club in New Zealand having
been formed in July 1910. New Brighton SLSC has had a distinguished
history both as a lifeguarding and a sporting organisation.
The weekend of 10 March to 13 March 2011 will see the club observe its
centenary by hosting the National Surf Life Saving Championships, which
will incorporate the NZ Masters Championships.

New Brighton is
a vibrant and thriving club with many opportunities for both junior and
senior members. The rejuvenation of New Brighton continues with the
recent clubhouse upgrade and purchase of new equipment to bring the club into the modern era as a lifeguarding and
sporting institution.
New Brighton SLSC is as
relevant to the wider Christchurch community today as it was all those
years ago in 1910. The club continues to provide an invaluable community service in
the form of voluntary lifeguard patrols. In the 2007-2008 summer season
club members worked a total of 2079 voluntary patrol hours and effected
4 rescues, 24 first aids, 2 searches and 741 preventative actions
involving over 2000 beach goers.
In addition to its patrol service the club offers a wide
range of social and sporting opportunities for its members.
